Things to do in Dongara Port Denison

Base yourself in one of our comfortable holiday homes to explore our region's top attractions

Dongara is famous for many things, two of which are the historic stone and brick Royal Steam Roller Flour Mill and the good old Moreton Bay Fig tree after which the main street is named. Dongara’s main street is lined by these dramatic trees which were planted in 1906 and are now classified by the National Trust.

Just three kilometres away overlooking the Marina is the twin town of Port Denison. Originally built on a strong rural economy, Dongara and Port Denison now have a thriving Rock Lobster fishing and processing industry. Both towns are often referred to as the ‘Rock Lobster Capital’, for the many magnificent crustaceans caught in season.

Discover Local Attractions

The best way to get to know a place is by taking a walk through its history. The Dongara Heritage Walk is a 4km walk featuring some of Dongara’s historic buildings and landmarks such as Russ Cottage, the Old Police Station Museum and the Fishermans Memorial Obelisk.

Enjoy a movie under the stars in the heritage listed Dongara Denison Drive In from September to May. Stock up on local produce, arts and craft at the Dongara Markets, which are held on the first Saturday of each month.

Fishing, Boating & Water Sports

Visitors to Dongara Port Denison are spoilt for choice when it comes to find amazing spots for water sports or activities such as fishing and boating.

Go for a stand up paddle boarding at South Beach, or windsurf along Grannies Beach. Wet your fishing line on the recreational jetty next to the boat ramp or the fishing platform at Grannies Beach. If you are after a bigger catch, launch your boat at the boat ramp accessible from Point Leander Drive in Port Denison. Find more info on fishing in Dongara Port Denison here

For a truly leisurely walk, the Irwin River Nature Trail is just perfect. Spot all the interesting river wildlife, including black swans and pelicans, just to name a few. Other exciting walking trails are the Thungara Trails, a collection of 6 different walks ranging from 2.7km to 9km. Visit the website of the Shire of Irwin for maps and brochures.

During Wildflower season (July-September), Dongara is the perfect gateway to explore nature’s stunning displays of wreath flowers, everlastings and pom poms as it’s only a short drive to Wildflower hotspots such as Coalseam Conservation Park, Morawa, Mullewa and Perenjori.
